W.R.M. - Wandering Reclamation Militia 

Story

W.R.M. is a top-down shooter exploring the underground of a post-apocalyptical steampunk zombie game. Besides trying to crap 3 themes into one, we explore the world as a W.R.M. as a reclaimer: a fighting member of the survivors. Mission after mission you clear out hordes on the converted, scavenge resources, and try to restore a sense of what humanity used to be. The overworld is covered with a toxic gas that we breathed in with slowly convert you into a mixture of the dead and the living. Those from the old world had infused themselves with steam powered technology before the great disaster. Thus making them a mix of living, dead, and technology. 

Irradiated anthracite drew in large crowds of  engineers, miners, and capitalists. The volatile anthracite could handle hotter temperatures; however it became more fragile. If one could prevent it from dropping, the anthracite would contain the radiation and could become a new source of power. Thinking they contained the radiation well enough, the scientists began to infuse and enhance humans to become better workers, miners, humans. It didn't take long for the world to see the potential and lose it all in almost the same moment. 

One of the most precious resources in this world is anthracite. Settlements of the last bits of the human race depend on it to survive now. And why not enhance your equipment with it while you're at it. There's no communication, large network of people anymore. You and the rest need to use what you can find rather than what you can create. 

Background

A strong departure from Alistair's Journey and Total System Failure, W.R.M. is trying to upgrade our capabilities as designers. We have been working on this project for a year now. With the same strong team of 3 and a third party artist: LLA 3D Creations, we have been crafting another 2D shooter game, but with a  darker visual to the game. All of us have been working to make this darker game with more than a few personal struggles hitting us at various times. Making this game has been a true test to what we can do a group and what we can stick through.

Mechanics

This rouge-like top-down shooter starts you off in a world of zombies trying to kill you. You need to find weapons, armors, and equipment to make this mission and the next easier.  

  • Equipment Selection: Before starting any mission, you select what equipment you are going to bring with you. Select from a mixture of over 20 options of equipment and enhancements. At first you have what the settlement could provide to you: sidearm, some explosives, and some tracer ammo. 
  • Shoddy Equipment: Any equipment you used in the last will not carry through with you to the next mission. 
  • Difficulty: Choosing the difficulty increases or decreases the enemy's stats and does the same to the loot chances. 
  • Procedural Generation: Each mission will spawn from a wide selection of rooms with a few reoccurring rooms and specific rooms for the mission. Some missions can generate 30+ rooms you need to survive through.
  • Random Generation: Once each room is spawned, several room elements are added: enemies, extra doors, extra treasures, dark/flooded rooms, and mission objectives, if the mission needs it. 
  • Enemy Types: There are 5 enemy types to date that the player will have to face at different points in the game. 
  • Environmental Hazards: From explosive barrels to generators that break lights to security doors that hold extra enemies, you don't always want to shoot everything. 
  • Optional Repeat Missions: Since missions will have their own variety of enemies and equipment, you may want to add some more to your stockpile by repeating a mission or two.
